The airline started as Interior Airways in the late 1940s. In the 1970s to reflect its international charter business it changed its name to Alaska International Air. In 1982 the airline bought a regional passenger/cargo airline named Great Northern. In 1984, the airline name changed to MarkAir. In the mid-1980s MarkAir and Alaska Airlines entered into a codesharing agreement. In 1990, Alaska Airlines cancelled its codesharing agreement with MarkAir. By the end of 1992 it declared bankruptcy and restructed itself in 1993. In 1995 Mark Air faced bankruptcy againand shut down in 1996.
